One of the biggest questions I get when planning a photo session is, "Where should we go?" The good news is that Northern Colorado has so many beautiful options, whether you're dreaming of wide-open fields, towering trees, mountain views, charming architecture, or even the cozy feel of a greenhouse. To make choosing a location a little easier, I've grouped some of my favorite photography spots by style. Browse through each category, see what catches your eye, and don't worry if you can't decide—I’m always happy to help you find the perfect location for your session!

 

 

Favorite Field and Tree Locations

 

1. Riverbend Ponds

If I had to pick just one location, Riverbend Ponds would probably be it. It's one of my favorite spots because it has a little bit of everything. You'll find beautiful trees, wide open grassy areas, peaceful ponds, and a river—all within a short walk. That variety makes it easy to create a gallery with lots of different looks without having to drive to multiple locations. It's gorgeous in the spring, summer and fall and works well for families, couples, seniors, and just about any type of session. Plus, it's conveniently located, making it an easy choice for anyone in Northern Colorado.

2. Arapahoe Bend Natural Area

Arapahoe Bend Natural Area is another one of my favorite locations, especially if you're looking for lush greenery. Conveniently located just off Harmony Road and I-25, it's easy to get to while still feeling like you've escaped into nature. During the summer, the trees and grasses are beautifully green, and the winding water creates a peaceful backdrop for photos. With open fields, lake views, and plenty of natural scenery, it's a wonderful choice for families, couples, seniors, and anyone wanting a classic Colorado outdoor look without venturing into the mountains.

3. Eastman Park

Located in Windsor, Eastman Park is a beautiful spot that offers a little bit of everything in one location. You'll find open fields, a winding river, a charming bridge, and large rocks along the water that add great texture and variety to your photos. Whether you're looking for wide-open natural scenery or a few unique features to mix into your gallery, Eastman Park is a versatile location that photographs beautifully throughout the year.

4. Poudre River Trail

The Poudre River Trail in Windsor is a beautiful riverside location that's especially stunning in the fall. Located just off Highway 257, this spot follows the Cache la Poudre River and is lined with gorgeous cottonwood trees that turn vibrant shades of yellow each autumn.

 

Favorite Mountain Locations

 

5. Horsetooth Reservoir  

If you're looking for mountain views without driving deep into the Rockies, Horsetooth Reservoir is hard to beat. Located in Fort Collins, this spot offers incredible views of the reservoir with the mountains rising in the background. The large rock formations add a rugged Colorado feel and make for unique photo opportunities you won't find at many other locations.

6. Lory State Park  

Located just beyond Horsetooth Reservoir, Lory State Park is a great choice if you're looking for a more mountain-like setting. With towering pine trees, rolling foothills, and beautiful mountain views, it has that classic Colorado feel without having to travel far. The peaceful trails and natural scenery make it a wonderful location for couples, families, and seniors who want a backdrop that feels adventurous, while still being easily accessible.

7. Watson Lake   

Tucked away in Bellvue, just northwest of Fort Collins, Watson Lake is one of those hidden gems that offers a little bit of everything. You can choose between scenic spots along the river or the lake itself, both with beautiful mountain views in the background. It's especially stunning during the summer when everything is lush and green, and in the fall when the changing leaves add even more color to the landscape. If you're looking for a peaceful location with classic Colorado scenery, Watson Lake is definitely worth considering.

8. Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park    

Located in the Poudre Canyon on the way to Estes Park, Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park is perfect for anyone wanting dramatic mountain scenery. Surrounded by evergreen trees, and stunning views, this location feels like you've escaped into the heart of the Rockies. The natural beauty of the canyon creates a breathtaking backdrop in every season, making it a wonderful choice for couples, families, seniors, and anyone wanting that classic Colorado mountain look without hiking far.

9. Table Mesa Trail     

Table Mesa Trail in Boulder is one of my favorite spots for capturing those iconic Front Range mountain views. We even had our own family photos taken here by the amazing Breanne Weston (photos viewed below), so it holds a special place in my heart. The wide-open trails and unobstructed views of the Flatirons create a stunning backdrop, especially during golden hour. If you're looking for a location with breathtaking mountain scenery and a true Colorado feel, Table Mesa Trail is definitely one to consider.

10. Lily Lake     

Located just outside Estes Park, Lily Lake is one of the most scenic photography locations in Northern Colorado. The peaceful lake reflects the surrounding mountains, while the wooden boardwalk, open fields, and towering pine trees offer plenty of variety for your photos. It's a beautiful location in every season, but it's especially magical during the summer and fall when the landscape is full of color. If you're dreaming of mountain views with a little bit of everything, Lily Lake is always a favorite.

Favorite Architectual Locations

 

11. CSU Oval   

If you're looking for a location with timeless charm, the CSU Oval in Fort Collins is a fantastic choice. The historic buildings, mature trees, and beautiful sidewalks create a classic backdrop that works well in every season. It's one of my favorite places during the winter when many outdoor locations lose their color, because the stunning architecture keeps your photos feeling warm and interesting even after the leaves have fallen. Whether you're planning family photos, senior portraits, or a couples session, the CSU Oval offers a unique look that's hard to beat.

12. Windsor Town Hall  

Windsor Town Hall is one of my favorite hidden gems that's close to home. The building features beautiful architecture, clean lines, and timeless details that create a polished, elegant backdrop for photos. It's a great option if you're looking for something a little different than fields or mountain scenery while still staying close to Windsor. The classic design photographs beautifully year-round and adds a unique touch to family, senior, or couples sessions.

13. Blooms on 23rd  

If you're looking for something a little different, Blooms on 23rd is such a fun option. Located on the Windsor/Severance border, this charming greenhouse is filled with beautiful plants and features adorable seasonal décor throughout the year. It offers a bright, cozy atmosphere that's perfect if you want a unique indoor setting or a little extra greenery no matter the season. Whether you're planning family photos, maternity, couples, or branding sessions, Blooms on 23rd provides a fresh and inviting backdrop that's unlike anywhere else in Northern Colorado.

14. Heartwood Studio

Located in Eaton, Heartwood Studio offers the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor photo opportunities. Inside, you'll find gorgeous floor-to-ceiling glass windows that fill the space with natural light, along with a charming brick wall and a cozy bookcase that add warmth and character to your photos. Step outside, and you'll have access to an open field for even more variety. It's a wonderful option if you want a clean, timeless look without having to worry about the weather, while still getting a few outdoor images as part of your session.

15. Fort Collins Old Town 

Old Town Fort Collins is a classic choice if you're looking for an urban backdrop with plenty of variety. From charming brick walls and clean white walls to historic buildings, there's no shortage of unique spots to explore. The downtown atmosphere adds so much character to your photos while still keeping a timeless feel. Whether you're planning senior portraits, couples photos, or a family session, Old Town offers endless opportunities for a fun and diverse gallery.
